When Michelle met Rick Bezet 21 years ago, she didn’t know that she would one day be a mother to 7,000 family members. Sitting in her husband’s comfortable, well-decorated office at New Life Church in Conway, Michelle’s laid-back attitude and warm smile instantly welcomed me into her busy world as a mother and pastor’s wife.
Her husband of over two decades is the founder and executive pastor of the growing church. New Life has two other campuses - one in Little Rock and one in Heber Springs. The Bezets have called Conway home since 2000.
I had grand plans for my daughter’s first birthday party, which required months of preparation. I made my own invitations that featured her photo in her “Birthday Princess” feather-trimmed hat. I created a collage to hang at the party that took our guests through her first year of life via month-by-month photos. I bought pink roses for the table and outfitted the house in a pink princess theme. I even ordered two cakes – one large for our guests that featured pink ballet shoes and a smaller version for my daughter to tear into that complemented the design of the larger cake.
Okay, this month is for all those cooking dads and also for those dads who need to cook on special occasions—hint—Mother’s Day is May 10th!
I have to say it’s true, with me being a chef, of course I do all the cooking at home. But for me to truly call this issue “a meal that even dad can do”—I decided to put the recipe to the test!
Women need to look fabulous while they are expecting a baby as much as any other time in life. That is the belief that started LeeAnna Boyce’s business, and it seems to have been well-received.
Boyce opened Mommie 2 B in downtown Conway on North Street near Locust Avenue in October. The business is a fashion boutique for expectant mothers, also carrying some infant clothing and gifts.
Boyce is not a mother yet herself, but she said all her friends who have children had trouble finding “anything cute, anything that fit right” while they were expecting.
I have found that mothers are the consummate “reducers, re-users, and recyclers”. It seems as if when God gives you the gift of a precious child to raise and love, He also doles out various abilities unique to motherhood and necessary in successfully raising that baby for the next 18 years and beyond.
Childbirth is a momentous occasion in a female’s life, as it should be. It is the culmination of nine months or so of anticipating the new arrival. For some, it is the fulfillment of a long-denied dream to create a new life that is, and always will be, a part of the expectant mother and father. It is the birth of a new human being to love, nurture, teach, and protect. For others it is a signal for a time to leave behind childish things and be the adults they have now become.
Motherhood is not a one-size-fits all category in life. This may seem like an interesting statement but certainly represents truth from my perspective. I have lived 33 years. During this time, I can identity four roles motherhood has played in my life. Each role is special and provides a unique outlook on a singular topic.
Mothers of Preschoolers, often known as MOPS, is a gift for moms. The gift you find at a MOPS group is a gathering of friends to talk and share with as you journey through those formative years with your children. The goal of MOPS is to equip, encourage, and support moms. MOPS wants to see every mother flourish in her career of motherhood.
