Decorate your home with scripture
Creative use of scripture provides a way to decorate your home as well as proclaim spiritual truth. Allow me to share three passages of scripture that line the doorways and walls of my home.
Above my entryway door, you will find one of my favorite passages of scripture. Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God.” Each time I walk in or out of my front door, I am reminded about the great benefit of stopping and enjoying a few moments of stillness before the Lord. During this time, I think about the fact that God is God and that I am not. As I take this time, I find myself less worried about the things that take place during my day. As a result, a discipline develops in my daily walk with God. I recognize God is in control of every aspect of my life--- there is nothing that I face when I walk in my front door or out of my front door that God is not aware of and able to handle.
The door used more than any other door in my home is the door leading to the garage. Next to this door hangs a cross with a portion of Psalm 138:8 etched on it. “The Lord will fulfill his purposes for me.” The placement of this cross is very strategic. The garage door is used when I am on my way to a specific location. Before I reach that location, I need to know two things. First, God has a plan for my life. Second, in God’s mind the plan is a done deal. Freedom comes as I am reminded of this spiritual truth. I do not have to make things happen in my life. Instead, I must surrender to God’s plans and allow Him to work in me and through me for His glory.
The fact that Psalm 138:8 is written on a cross also has meaning. It is because of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection that I have freedom to live the life God has called me to live. The cross provides the opportunity to know God in a real, personal way. No longer do I have to wonder if God loves me. He proved it when Jesus died. No longer do I have to ask God, “Do you have a plan for my life?” He made provision for that plan in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Each day I need to take the provision of the cross and allow it to change my life. I know that God has a daily plan for me and that nothing can stop the work of God---not me, not others, and not the circumstances of life. The Lord will fulfill His plan for me. He will do it!
Hanging on the wall next to my computer is one of the most meaningful pictures in my home. The picture displays the key verse for True Vine Ministry. John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the braches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” Everything about True Vine Ministry is wrapped up in this verse. Jesus provides everything I need for life. He is my vine. Therefore, I find my nourishment and my support in Him. There is nothing that I can do on my own. There is no good thing in me. Anything that results from me or the ministry God has called me to take part in occurs as I abide in Him. This means my focus each day must be to remain connected to Jesus Christ. Spiritual fruit results from this type of focus. Without this focus, the overarching result of my life will be nothing!
Each of these passages of scripture means something to me. All three have meaning inherit to my walk with God. As I pass by these visible reminders, my heart is encouraged, my faith is strengthened, and my focus becomes clear. These passages provide a visible witness of my faith in God and my desperate need for Jesus Christ.
For you and your family, different scripture will provide meaning. I encourage you to find these passages of scripture and incorporate them in your home. Place them above the doorways, down the hallways, or on your tables. Use your home as an opportunity to express your faith and sharpen your spiritual focus. You never know how God might use one of these passages of scripture to get you through a difficult time or encourage the heart of another.
